The day my grandmother taught me to be patient

The person who taught me the most important lesson of my life is my grandmother, Rosa. She's seventy-five and she grows the best tomatoes in our village.

When I was ten, I wanted to help her in the garden, but I got bored after five minutes because nothing happened. She laughed and told me that good things take time. Then she gave me my own small plant to look after.

Every day I watered it, and after a few weeks the first tomato appeared. I was so proud! Since then, whenever I want to give up on something, I remember that little plant.

Criterios de corrección

  • Content (0–5): all the content is relevant and the reader is fully informed – every note or question is answered.
  • Communicative Achievement (0–5): the register suits the reader (friend, teacher, magazine readers) and the text holds their attention.
  • Organisation (0–5): the text is well organised and connected with linking words (and, but, because, so, then, however…) and paragraphs.
  • Language (0–5): a range of everyday vocabulary and simple and some more complex grammar, used with good control; mistakes do not stop the reader understanding.

Explicación

In Part 2 you write either an article or a story. An article must answer every question in the announcement; a title, a lively opening and a direct, friendly style ('Have you ever…?') make it interesting for magazine readers.

A week offline? I could do it!

Could I survive seven days without the internet? I think so, although it wouldn't be easy.

The thing I'd miss most is chatting with my friends in the evenings. We send each other messages all the time, so I'd probably feel a bit lonely at first.

Instead, I'd spend more time outside. I'd go cycling, play basketball in the park and maybe finally finish the book I started last summer. I'd also visit my friends in person instead of messaging them.

Overall, I think it would be a good experience. It might even help me sleep better!

My secret place by the river

When life gets stressful, there's one place I always go: a small wooden bench next to the river, about ten minutes from my house. Hardly anyone knows about it, so it's usually very quiet.

I normally take a book or just sit and watch the water. Sometimes I see ducks, and once I even saw a kingfisher, which was amazing.

Why does it help me relax? I think it's the sound of the water. It's impossible to think about homework or exams when you're listening to it. After half an hour there, I always feel calm and ready to face the world again.
