Traffic congestion is a serious problem in many cities, wasting time and polluting the air. It has been suggested that making buses and trains free would be the most effective solution. While I agree that free public transport could help, I do not believe it is the best way to reduce congestion on its own.

There is no doubt that cost influences how people travel. If public transport were free, some drivers, particularly those on low incomes, would probably leave their cars at home, and fewer vehicles on the road would mean shorter journeys for everyone. Free fares would also speed up boarding, since passengers would no longer need to buy tickets.

However, price is often not the main reason why people drive. Many commuters choose their cars because buses are slow, crowded or unreliable, or because there is no convenient route between their home and their workplace. If the service itself does not improve, removing fares will change very little. In fact, a sudden increase in passengers could make overcrowding worse, and the loss of ticket revenue might leave the city with less money to invest in new vehicles and routes.

In my opinion, a more effective strategy would combine several measures. Cities should invest in frequent, reliable services and dedicated bus lanes, so that public transport is genuinely faster than driving. At the same time, charges for driving into the city centre or for parking would discourage unnecessary car journeys, and the money raised could help to fund better public transport.

In conclusion, although free public transport might attract some drivers, it is unlikely to solve congestion unless it is part of a wider plan that makes public transport more attractive and driving less so.

Criterios de corrección

  • Task Response: answers every part of the question; presents a clear position throughout; develops main ideas with relevant explanations and examples
  • Coherence and Cohesion: logical progression; one central idea per paragraph; cohesive devices used naturally, not mechanically; clear introduction and conclusion
  • Lexical Resource: wide, precise vocabulary with some less common items and collocations; few errors in word choice, spelling and word formation
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: wide range of structures (conditionals, passives, relative and concessive clauses); the majority of sentences error-free; accurate punctuation
  • Length and time: at least 250 words in about 40 minutes (answers under 250 words lose marks under Task Response)

Explicación

'To what extent do you agree or disagree?' needs a clear position from the first paragraph (here: partly agree). Note the key word 'best': the essay argues that free transport helps but is not the BEST way, and proposes a better alternative. Concede the opposite side, then explain why it is not sufficient, with cause-and-effect reasoning.

Writing Task 2. You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic:

In many countries, an increasing number of people now work from home for at least part of the week instead of travelling to an office. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Over the last few years, working from home has changed from an unusual privilege into a normal arrangement for millions of employees. Although this trend has some real drawbacks, I believe that, for most people and most organisations, its benefits are greater.

The most obvious advantage is the time and money saved on commuting. An employee who spends an hour each way travelling to an office gains ten hours a week by working at home, time that can be used for rest, exercise or family. Fewer journeys also mean less traffic congestion and lower emissions in large cities. In addition, many people find that they concentrate better at home, away from the interruptions of an open-plan office, and employers can reduce their spending on expensive office space.

There are, however, genuine disadvantages. Young employees in particular may learn more slowly when they cannot observe experienced colleagues or ask quick questions in person. Some people also feel isolated, and the boundary between work and private life can become blurred, so that they find themselves answering emails late in the evening. Not everyone, moreover, has a quiet room in which to work.

In my view, most of these problems can be reduced by sensible organisation rather than by abandoning the practice. A hybrid model, in which staff spend two or three days a week in the office, allows teams to meet, train new colleagues and maintain relationships, while still offering most of the benefits of home working. Clear rules about when employees are expected to reply to messages can also protect their free time.

In conclusion, while working from home is not ideal for every person or every job, its advantages for individuals, companies and cities outweigh its disadvantages, particularly when it is combined with regular time in the office.

This is an 'advantages outweigh disadvantages' question, so you must weigh them and give a clear verdict in the introduction and conclusion. A strong plan: one paragraph of advantages, one of disadvantages, then a paragraph explaining why the balance favours your view (here: a hybrid model solves most problems). Develop each point with a consequence or example instead of listing many short ideas.

Writing Task 2. You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic:

In many countries, fewer young people are learning practical skills such as cooking, sewing and basic household repairs. Why is this happening? What can be done to address this situation?

It is often said that young people today are less able to cook a meal or fix a broken shelf than previous generations. This essay will examine the main reasons for this trend and suggest some ways of reversing it.

One important reason is that such skills no longer seem necessary in daily life. Ready-made meals, food delivery services and cheap clothing mean that young people can easily buy what their parents or grandparents once had to make or repair themselves. A second reason is the pressure of academic work. Schools and families increasingly focus on exam results, and subjects such as cookery or woodwork are often reduced or removed from the timetable to make room for core academic subjects. Finally, many parents work long hours and have little time to teach these skills at home, so children rarely watch or help adults doing practical tasks.

There are several ways to address this problem. First, schools could reintroduce practical lessons, not as an optional extra but as part of the core curriculum, perhaps linked to subjects like science and mathematics so that they do not compete with academic priorities. Second, local communities could offer free workshops, for example repair cafés where volunteers show young people how to fix bicycles or electrical items. Third, parents can involve their children in simple everyday tasks, such as preparing a family meal at the weekend, which requires little extra time.

In conclusion, young people are learning fewer practical skills mainly because these skills seem unnecessary and because education has become more exam-focused. However, with changes in schools, community initiatives and small steps at home, this trend could be reversed, helping young people to become more independent and less wasteful.

Explicación

A two-question task ('Why...? What can be done...?') must answer BOTH questions fully; one body paragraph for causes and one for solutions is a clear structure. Link each solution to a cause you gave (exam pressure → practical lessons in the curriculum; busy parents → small tasks at home) so the essay reads as one argument, not two lists.
