Professor
When preparing for an important exam, some students prefer to study in a group, while others prefer to study alone. Which approach do you think is more effective for learning, and why?
Lucas
Studying in a group is better. When I explain an idea to my classmates, I find out quickly whether I really understand it. Also, other people can explain things that I missed in class.
Mei
I prefer studying alone. Groups often get distracted, and we end up talking about other things. When I'm alone, I can focus on the topics I find difficult instead of the ones everyone else wants to review.

In my opinion, the most effective approach is to study alone first and then meet with a group near the end. Mei is right that groups waste time when the members are not prepared, but Lucas makes a good point about explaining ideas to others. If everyone studies alone first, the group meeting can be used only for difficult questions and for testing each other. Last semester, I tried this for my biology final. I spent a week reviewing on my own, and then three classmates and I met for two hours to quiz each other. Because we were all prepared, nobody got distracted, and I discovered two topics I had misunderstood. My grade was the best I have ever had in a science class.
Criterios de corrección
States a clear opinion that answers the professor's question
Supports the opinion with reasons, explanations, and at least one specific example
Adds a new idea instead of only repeating the two students' points
Coherent flow with clear connections between ideas
Wide, accurate range of vocabulary and grammar
Explicación
Choosing a combination is allowed if the position is clear. The sample states a specific approach (alone first, then a group), connects it to both classmates' points, and adds a new idea with a concrete personal example and a result. A response that only says "I agree with Lucas" and repeats his reason would not add enough to the discussion.

Some cities have closed certain downtown streets to cars and turned them into pedestrian-only zones with benches, trees, and outdoor cafés. Do you think cities should create more pedestrian-only streets? Why or why not?
Ana
Yes. Pedestrian streets are safer and more pleasant, and they bring more customers to local shops because people walk slowly and look at the windows. They make the city center a place where people want to spend time.
Kevin
I'm not sure. Stores still need deliveries, and older people or people with disabilities may have trouble reaching shops if they cannot park nearby. Closing streets can make the city less accessible for them.

I support more pedestrian streets, but only if cities plan them carefully to answer Kevin's concerns. Ana is right about the benefits, and I would add one more: pedestrian streets reduce noise and air pollution, which improves the health of the people who live downtown, not only visitors. However, Kevin's point about accessibility is important. A good solution is to allow deliveries early in the morning, before the shops open, and to add a small electric shuttle or reserved parking spaces at each end of the street for people with limited mobility. My hometown did this a few years ago. At first, some shop owners complained, but now the street is the busiest in the city, and the shuttle is used by many elderly residents every day.

Explicación
The sample takes a qualified position (yes, with conditions), adds a new benefit that Ana did not mention (health of residents), and turns Kevin's objection into specific solutions (delivery hours, shuttle, reserved parking) supported by an example. Simply saying "I agree with Ana because shops get more customers" would repeat her post without adding anything.

Governments around the world spend billions on space exploration. Some people argue that this money should be spent on solving problems here on Earth, such as poverty and climate change. Others believe space research is a worthwhile investment. What is your opinion, and why?
Keisha
We should solve Earth's problems first. It's hard to justify sending rockets to Mars when millions of people don't have clean water. The money could make an immediate difference in people's lives.
Marco
Space research actually helps solve problems on Earth. Satellites monitor climate change, predict storms, and help farmers. Many technologies we use every day were first developed for space programs.

I believe governments should keep funding space research, but they should prioritize projects with clear benefits on Earth. Keisha is right that basic needs are urgent, yet space budgets are usually a small share of government spending, so cutting them would not solve poverty on its own. Marco's point about satellites is convincing, and I would add another benefit: space programs inspire young people to study science and engineering. When my country launched its first weather satellite, science enrollment at my school noticeably increased, and several of my classmates chose engineering careers because of it. A balanced approach would direct most funding toward Earth-observation satellites and research with practical applications, while supporting a smaller number of long-term missions such as exploring other planets.

A strong response states a clear position, responds to both classmates (for example, putting Keisha's concern in perspective), and adds a new reason, such as inspiration for future scientists, with a specific example. Weak responses repeat Marco's list of benefits or ignore the cost question entirely.
