The Long Table – a documentary that made me rethink food waste
I expected The Long Table to be yet another worthy documentary that would make me feel guilty for an hour and then be forgotten. I could not have been more wrong.
The film follows a year in the life of a small charity in Manchester that collects surplus food from supermarkets, restaurants and farms and turns it into meals for people who cannot afford to eat properly. Rather than relying on alarming statistics or a dramatic voice-over, the director simply lets the volunteers and the people they feed tell their own stories, and the result is both moving and surprisingly funny.
What struck me most was the sheer scale of the waste. I had always assumed that food was thrown away mainly because it had gone off. In fact, as the documentary shows, perfectly good produce is regularly discarded because it is the wrong shape, because a label has been misprinted or simply because a shop has over-ordered. Since watching it, I have become far more careful about planning meals.
If the film has a weakness, it is that it offers few answers about how the problem might be tackled on a larger scale. Nevertheless, it succeeds brilliantly in making an abstract issue feel personal.
I would wholeheartedly recommend The Long Table to anyone, and particularly to those who, like me, had never given much thought to what happens to the food we do not eat. It is well worth ninety minutes of your time.
Criterios de corrección
Content (0–5): everything is relevant and the target reader is fully informed; all parts of the task are covered and developed.
Communicative Achievement (0–5): the conventions of a review are used effectively; the register (neutral to semi-formal, engaging for readers of a website) holds the reader's attention and communicates straightforward and complex ideas.
Organisation (0–5): the text is well organised and coherent, with a variety of cohesive devices and organisational patterns used to generally good effect.
Language (0–5): a range of vocabulary, including less common lexis, and a range of simple and complex grammatical forms, used with control and flexibility; occasional errors do not impede communication.
Explicación
In the exam you choose ONE of three Part 2 tasks. For a review, cover every point in the prompt, use the conventions of the genre (layout, headings or greeting/closing where appropriate) and keep a consistent neutral to semi-formal register throughout.

Proposal: A quiet study centre for students
Introduction The aim of this proposal is to recommend how the funds recently made available for student facilities could be used most effectively. It is based on an informal survey of sixty students.
The current situation At present, students have two options for independent study: the library, which is often full by mid-morning, and the canteen, which is far too noisy for serious work. As a result, many students report that they leave college as soon as their classes finish, even though they would prefer to stay and study on the premises.
Recommendation I would propose converting the disused seminar room on the second floor into a dedicated quiet study centre. This would involve installing individual desks with power sockets, improving the lighting and providing a small number of bookable rooms for group projects. Since the room already exists, the cost would be considerably lower than that of a new building.
Benefits Students would gain a calm, reliable space in which to work between classes, which would be particularly valuable for those who live some distance away or who have limited space at home. The group rooms would also encourage collaboration on assignments. For the college, better study conditions are likely to lead to improved results and higher levels of student satisfaction, both of which enhance its reputation.
Conclusion I therefore strongly recommend that the funds be used to create a quiet study centre. I am confident that it would be well used from the day it opened.

Report on the student social programme
Purpose This report evaluates the social programme offered during the spring term, identifies its main weaknesses and makes recommendations for the future. It is based on attendance figures and a questionnaire completed by 84 students.
Popularity of activities The weekend excursions were by far the most successful element of the programme, with almost every place taken and very positive comments about the guides. The weekly film evenings were also reasonably well attended. By contrast, the museum visits on weekday afternoons attracted very few participants, and two were cancelled.
Problems identified The main difficulty appears to be timing rather than content. Many students take part-time jobs or have homework in the afternoons, which explains the poor attendance at weekday events. A significant number also complained that information about activities was only posted on the noticeboard, so they often heard about trips too late to sign up. Finally, several respondents felt that the excursions were too expensive for students on a tight budget.
Recommendations In light of these findings, I would recommend the following: - moving cultural visits to Saturday mornings, when demand is highest; - advertising all activities through the school app and by email at least a week in advance; - offering a limited number of subsidised places on each excursion for students who need them.
Conclusion The programme is clearly valued by students, but it could reach far more of them if these relatively simple changes were introduced. I would suggest reviewing attendance again at the end of the summer term.
