The race I nearly didn't run

Two years ago, I couldn't run for a bus without getting out of breath. So when my friend Leila suggested we enter a half-marathon together, I laughed. (16) ______ She had already found a training plan online, and she promised we would take it slowly.

We started by running for just one minute and walking for two, three times a week. (17) ______ But after a month, I could run for twenty minutes without stopping, and I began to look forward to our evening runs in the park.

Then, six weeks before the race, I hurt my ankle on an icy path. The doctor told me to rest it completely for a fortnight. (18) ______ Leila refused to let me give up. She came round every evening to keep me company, and when I was allowed to train again, she slowed down so that I could keep up.

On the day of the race, it rained heavily. (19) ______ Thousands of people were standing at the start line in plastic bags and raincoats, laughing and chatting.

I finished in two hours and twenty minutes – not fast, but I didn't care. (20) ______ We're already planning our next challenge: a full marathon.

Respuesta correcta: E. E But she was completely serious.

Explicación

E contrasts with 'I laughed': the writer thought it was a joke, but Leila was serious – and she had already found a training plan.

The boy who built a boat

When fifteen-year-old Sam Fletcher told his family he was going to build a boat, nobody took him seriously. (16) ______ But Sam had been watching online videos about boat-building for months, and he was determined to try.

He started by drawing plans in a notebook. (17) ______ So he asked his grandfather, a retired carpenter, for help. The two of them spent every Saturday morning in the garage, measuring and cutting wood. 'Grandad was very patient,' Sam says. 'He made me do everything myself, even when I got it wrong.'

There were plenty of problems along the way. Twice, Sam had to throw away pieces he had spent weeks on because they didn't fit together properly. (18) ______ 'I nearly gave up after the second time,' he admits. 'But Grandad told me that every boat-builder has a pile of mistakes in the corner of the workshop.'

The money for materials came from Sam's part-time job at a local supermarket. (19) ______ Some neighbours who had heard about the project also gave him old paint and tools they no longer needed.

After eighteen months, the boat was finally ready. On a cold morning in April, Sam and his grandfather carried it down to the lake near their home. (20) ______ To everyone's relief, it floated perfectly. 'It was the best moment of my life,' Sam says. 'Now I'm planning a bigger one.'

Part 4 · Gap 16. Five sentences have been removed from the text. Choose the sentence (A–H) which fits gap 16. There are three extra sentences which you do not need to use.

  1. A. A Each mistake meant buying more wood, which was expensive.
  2. B. B Sam's parents were happy to pay for everything he needed.
  3. C. C A small crowd of friends and family had gathered to watch.
  4. D. D They thought it was just another of his crazy ideas that would be forgotten in a week.
  5. E. E Building the boat took much less time than he had expected.
  6. F. F However, he soon realised that he didn't know how to use most of the tools he would need.
  7. G. G He saved almost every penny he earned there for over a year.
  8. H. H Sam's teacher asked him to write about the project for the school magazine.

Respuesta correcta: D. D They thought it was just another of his crazy ideas that would be forgotten in a week.

Explicación

D explains 'nobody took him seriously': they thought it was a crazy idea. The next sentence begins 'But Sam…', which contrasts with their opinion.

The Saturday Café

Every Saturday morning, a small café in the town of Millford is run entirely by teenagers. The idea came from local teacher Rosa Kent, who noticed that many of her students wanted part-time jobs but couldn't find any. (16) ______

She persuaded the owner of an empty shop to let her use it once a week, and within a month the Saturday Café had opened. (17) ______ Each Saturday, a team of six students cooks, serves customers and looks after the money, while Rosa stays in the background.

At first, things didn't always go smoothly. On the opening day, the coffee machine broke after an hour and the team ran out of milk. (18) ______ 'We learnt that you have to plan for everything,' says sixteen-year-old Kai.

The café doesn't make much money, but that isn't really the point. (19) ______ Several former volunteers have since found paid work in restaurants and shops, and they say their experience at the café helped them get the job.

Customers seem to love it too. Many come back every week, and some older residents say it's the only place where they get the chance to chat with young people. (20) ______ 'I think we've shown that young people are more responsible than people think,' says Kai.

Part 4 · Gap 16. Five sentences have been removed from the text. Choose the sentence (A–H) which fits gap 16. There are three extra sentences which you do not need to use.

  1. A. A Luckily, the customers were very understanding.
  2. B. B Rosa serves the customers herself, while the students watch and learn.
  3. C. C Employers often said they were looking for people with experience.
  4. D. D Rosa now hopes to open a second café in a nearby town.
  5. E. E Because of this, the café makes a large profit every week.
  6. F. F What matters more is the skills the students learn.
  7. G. G Most of them had already worked in cafés before.
  8. H. H Students apply for a place in the team, just as they would for a real job.

Respuesta correcta: C. C Employers often said they were looking for people with experience.

Explicación

C explains why the students 'couldn't find any' jobs: employers wanted experience. This is the problem that the café was created to solve.
